Cambridge Mikvah
Mikvah at Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 1LQ
During 2002 and 2003, the Trustees for the land of the student centre at 3 Thompson's Lane ignored the wishes of the students in two successive SGM motions, and refused to allow the construction of a mikvah on a patch of land on their property except with onerous conditions on the donors to pay for the destruction of the mikvah on short notice. During early 2005 the supporters of a mikvah in Cambridge sought and found a much better, more convenient and value for money location for the communal Mikvah on Milton Road
We will install the mikvah at the earliest opportunity, under the capable halachic guidance of Dayan I Gukovitzki who inspected our Mikvah on April 3 2005. Dayan I Gukovitzki is a member of the National Council for Taharas Hamishpocho, (NCTH) which supervises all provincial mikvaot in the UK.
The Directors have made and continue to make written appeals for funds. A group of potential donor trustees viewed the proposed mikvah on 22 May 2005 and paid £3,000 for the application for planning permission on 2 June 2005. Planning permission was granted by Cambridge City Council on 29 July 2005. The aforementioned donors made an offer to the owners of 268 Milton Road in early June 2005 for the purchase of the mikvah, and were issued by the owner with a contract for the purchase of the Mikvah in August 2005.
Advanced architectural drawings have been prepared by an architect who worked on the NW London mikvah, and a structural engineer who regularly works for the Freshwater group of companies has been engaged and has prepared a report on the basis of a trial hole and soil tests and is now preparing reinforcement drawings. An M&E engineer has also been engaged to provide advice.
After wide consultations, the Board has decided that it is in the best interest of the company and its members for the mikvah to have two side by side Hashoka and Zeriah borot, and for installation to proceed as quickly and efficiently as possible on that basis. Appeals for funds for this project, both from public and private sources are continuing.
The Mikvah will use renewable energy resources, will be economical to run, and will be in a wholly freestanding, detached, freehold building, and will be unencumbered by any mortgage. The superstructure already contains major utility connections, and benefits from cavity wall insulation (picture above).
Jewish students and their spouses attending Universities in Cambridge will be able to use the Mikvah free of charge.
